Searching for a job today is entirely different from years past, and if you are not willing to adapt, you will be left behind. Social networking is more and more important on a daily basis, and it is easier than you might think to create an online presence for yourself.

By now you’ve heard of Facebook and Twitter, and there is a good chance that you have an account. Facebook has over 1,000,000,000 (yes, one billion!) active users as of October 2012, and Twitter has over 500,000,000 as of April 2012. Employers may scour these sites to find your profile while researching you as a job candidate, so make sure there is nothing on there which will negatively impact your reputation.

Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a “social network” exclusively for business professionals? Enter LinkedIn, a professional networking site with over 200,000,000 users as of January 2013. Employers visit LinkedIn on a daily basis to research candidates, and if you do not have a profile, you are missing out!

LinkedIn enables you to create a profile containing employment and education information which will essentially serve as an online copy of your resume. In addition, you can connect (become “friends” for you Facebook users out there) with your former and current colleagues. You can even write recommendations or endorse the skills of your connections!

The more robust your profile is, the better, as employers often use LinkedIn as a tool when searching for potential employees. In summary, if you are not on LinkedIn, you are getting left behind. Online networking via social networking sites is the “way of the future” (and present) as far as job searching goes, so be proactive and create your account today!
